The Vestry of St. Michael’s is delighted to announce that The Rev. Canon John W. Newton IV has accepted the call to be our new Rector beginning March 1.
John currently works as Chief of Staff for Bishop Doyle with the Episcopal Diocese of Texas (EDoT) in Houston. Since 2015, he has been a member of the diocesan executive team to help clarify the diocesan vision and execute the strategy. Prior to that, he served as Canon for Christian Formation with the EDoT for four years, where he cast a vision for Christian Formation in our Diocese.
John began his ministry in 2008 as the Campus Missioner at the University of Texas, where he served as Vicar to a community of college students and young adults. When he left this position in early 2011, he had grown the campus ministry to be among the largest Episcopal campus ministries in the nation. He was also an Assisting Priest during this time at All Saint’s Episcopal Church. John graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and a Master of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary.
Several recommendations from the EDoT office described John as among the best and brightest in our Diocese, especially for his leadership, vision, preaching and pastoral care. He graduated top of his class from the UT Business Honors Program. He received the Harris Award upon graduation from Seminary for his academic excellence and strong leadership ability. He also received the Horne Award for Preaching upon graduation. He is a Daring Way Facilitator (based on Brené Brown’s books) and has written and published three books.
While in his current position, he has preached at about 30 churches per year in the Diocese. He “connects people” though his sermons, striving to “delight the soul and challenge the ego during [his] preaching.”
John is married to Emily, and they have two young daughters, Annie and KK (Katherine King). He enjoys travel, exercise, UT football, golf and spending time with his family. We would like to introduce you to John and his family via the video below and let you know how excited they are for this new chapter.
We look forward to extending a warm welcome to the entire Newton family.
