As of January 8, 2017, The Rev. Robby Vickery has retired as Rector of St. Michael’s after nearly 27 years of service. We honored him with a celebration of his ministry at his final services on January 8. This page will be regularly updated by the Vestry and Wardens as we undertake the work of calling St. Michael’s next permanent Rector.

The 9-member Rector Search Committee, formed in mid-August, was trained on Aug. 23rd by the Diocese of Texas Transition Office to properly conduct the search, interview candidates and, ultimately, select the right candidate for our next rector. We have been meeting every week since then and have completed all the recommended pre-interview preparations. In mid-September, the Diocese gave us resumes and portfolios of the top candidates, approved by the Bishop, with whom we have scheduled interviews and on-site visits in October. We are prepared to conduct 2nd interviews in November, and also complete additional initial interviews and visits with new candidates during that time if needed.
Each candidate has a link to our website which includes our Parish Profile, Mission-Vision-Values Statements and a description of The Rector We Seek. Following the congregational meeting on July 16, a small group of vestry and non-vestry representatives finalized the Mission, Vision and Core Values. The final version is posted on the website under About. Also, the Parish Profile is now completed and has now been posted on the website under News and Events. It outlines information about St. Michael’s to anyone interested in the open rector position. The Search Committee has been selected and will be ready to begin the active search after their training on August 23.

Congregational Meeting on July 16
Please come to a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, July 16 after the worship service until about 1:30pm in the Parish Hall. Immediately following a light lunch, Francene Young, the Diocese Transition Officer will review the results of our recent survey. We will then discuss potential updates to our Mission, Vision and Core Values to reflect the current views of our congregation. Be a part of these important discussions about the direction of St. Michael’s.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey. We got a great response from the congregation. This survey was designed and interpreted by a company that specifically works with churches. It has given us some feedback on the congregational outlook in our time of transition and what characteristics a new rector will need to take us there. The Vestry just received the survey reports and interpretation. We want to review the information and data thoroughly. Our next step is to share the results at congregational meetings in June. These meetings will be an opportunity to listen, be heard and have your questions answered about the information we received.
The Vestry is now accepting nominations for those interested in serving on the Search Committee for our new rector. You can nominate yourself or someone else (with their consent). The Vestry will select a small committee from the nominations received. Nomination forms and additional information are now on the website. Nominees should be active and confirmed members that are recognized as leaders in the church. Nominees must be able to keep information confidential, work well with others, attend frequent meetings and travel on weekends. The active search may take 6 to 9 month. The Committee will be responsible for interviewing candidates presented by the Bishop based on the characteristics outlined by the congregation. Committee members will represent the church and work together until they can recommend a candidate to the Vestry. St. Michael’s Profile is coming soon! A diligent group of parishioners is working hard on our Profile with information about St. Michael’s for anyone potentially interested in our church and the rector position. We expect that the Profile will be posted in July.

Rector Search Update from our Sr. Warden, Margo Russell – March 23, 2017:
The initial step for a church in transition between rectors is to determine where they are headed and what their focus is towards this mission from God. This is important to identify so that the new rector can be selected with the characteristics and skills needed to guide the church on this path. The Diocese has a clearly outlined process for us to follow. St. Michael’s has the fundamental ideals of our core values, mission and vision, but they were developed over twelve years ago. The Vestry reviewed these documents and determined the core values and mission were a bit stale. St. Michael’s has changed and evolved over this time.
We are developing a Task Force of church and program leaders to start the discussion on what the current direction of St. Michael’s is and what we value. A congregational consultant will guide us through these discussions to begin the process of redrafting our mission and core values in April. Soon thereafter, we will invite the congregation to attend a Visioning Event to discuss the preliminary work and provide feedback. This will be your chance to be involved in an exciting discussion on the future of St. Michael’s. Look for announcements soon about the date of this Visioning Event and plan to attend. Interim Rector Update from our Jr. Warden, Lisa Killough – March 20, 2017:
As of our March Vestry meeting on March 20th, we have called the Rev. Dr. Peter Casparian to be our Interim Rector. Peter will lead us during this process and support the Vestry as they continue the search process for St. Michael’s next permanent rector. We are thrilled to have Peter joining us here at St. Michael’s and look forward to his time with us as we continue through this exciting transition! Rector Search update from our Senior Warden, Lisa Killough – January 18, 2017:
St. Michael’s Vestry has already begun the process in searching for the next rector to lead our church. Last Saturday, we met with the Transitional Minister from the Diocese who gave us an overview of the process which begins with a Congregation Evaluation to determine who we are, what we are about and where we are going—sort of updating our Vision and Mission. Every parishioner will have an opportunity to contribute to this evaluation. Please know this search process will take up to a year, maybe longer. Be patient.

Vestry has also started the process to engage an Interim Rector for St. Michael’s. It is with hope that we should have an Interim Rector within 60 days.
