DEL VALLE BOOK DRIVE
For several years, St. Michael’s outreach commission has taken new and gently used books—about 2000 of them each year—to Del Valle Elementary in the middle of May. Children are allowed to select two books to take home “for keeps.” They range widely from simple “I Can Read” and “Amelia Bedelia” level books through classics like “Treasure Island.” Last year, surplus books were put on a bookmobile to circulate in Del Valle neighborhoods during the summer.
Most of the children are from poor homes without the luxury of books, so this can be a new and enriching experience for them. It also keeps up their reading skills over the summer. Donations are presently being accepted. For more ways to help just go to www.st-michaels.org/otheroutreach or contact Mary Hermes (firstname.lastname@example.org or Gail Reid (email@example.com).
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Would you be interested in participating in building a house? Wednesdays and Saturdays are the two days that non-regular volunteers participate. Skills necessary: Painting a board, hammer 4” nail into 2×4, assembling kitchen cabinets, installing exterior siding, windows and doors. If you don’t possess any of these skills, perhaps you can assist with making lunch? Want more information? contact Tom Bray
