The church columbarium returns us to the ancient practice of burial in or around the church and allows us to experience the communion of saints in a very real and practical way. St. Michael’s Columbarium is located on the west wall of the Worship Space. Each Sunday as we gather around God’s Table to join our voices with “… Angels and Archangels and all the company of heaven,” we are literally joined with those who are now in the nearer presence of God.
The cross from the Chapel at St. Michael’s previous location on Bee Cave Road hangs above the Columbarium.
St. Michael’s Columbarium serves as a lovely final resting place of the faithful departed and is a place to honor and remember the lives of members of St. Michael’s and their immediate families and to celebrate the glory of God.
An interment in St. Michael’s Columbarium is handled with love and dignity, whether it is “The Committal” which concludes the Burial Service (Book of Common Prayer, p. 501) or a separate memorial service you have planned with our clergy.
We offer other ways of remembering loved ones: Ashes of loved ones may be scattered (almost) anywhere on the grounds of St. Michael’s. Please speak with one of our clergy to arrange an appropriate location and committal service. Memorial and Thanksgiving Pavers are also available ($100 each) and are placed around the edge of our courtyard garden.
Frequently asked questions:
What exactly is a columbarium? It is a structure designed for the interment of a person’s cremated remains.
Why has St. Michael’s built a columbarium? We built the columbarium to provide an affordable, dignified burial option and to respond to parishioners who wish to place ashes of loved ones at St. Michael’s.
Are there niches of different sizes? We offer niches to accommodate two standard 5 ½ x 5 ½ x 7” urns and larger niches designed to accommodate custom urn(s).
What are the costs of niches? A standard niche costs $1,000. Standard urn and engraving are additional costs at the time of the interment. The larger niches cost $1,500.
Do I own the niche and can I sell it? The right to use your purchased niche may not be sold or transferred. In extenuating pastoral circumstances the Columbarium Guild may “buy back” a niche.
Can I purchase a niche today? Yes, simply contact our Columbarium Guild or speak to anyone in the church office or one of the clergy.
